Jesus Caban, Ph.D. is the Chief of Clinical and Research Informatics at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Caban manages a team of analysts, scientists, researchers, and developers that provide enterprise applications, business metrics, data, and advanced analytical support to the Defense Intrepid Network for TBI and Brain Health across 13 military treatment facilities (MTFs), affiliated TBI clinics throughout the Military Health System (MHS), and other partnering clinical communities.

Since 2011, Dr. Caban has made significant contributions to the MHS by planning, implementing, rolling out, and sustaining multiple enterprise solutions including the DoD TBI Patient Registry, TBI Portal, TBI Dashboards, Clinical Assessment Management Portal (CAMP), and multiple AI/ML models for mental health. The DoD TBI Patient registry tracks, captures, and standardizes all longitudinal clinical data for active-duty service members diagnosed with a TBI. Data for over 500K patients has been integrated to enable continuity of care, performance improvement studies, and research projects. The TBI Portal is the clinical interface to the TBI patient registry used at the point-of-care by 800+ TBI providers to access a consolidated longitudinal view of the patient’s clinical trajectories. CAMP is a platform for the collection and management of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and currently used across 120+ clinics.

Dr. Caban is committed to educating and training the next generation of professionals in clinical informatics, ML/AI, and data science. He’s an adjunct faculty at the Uniform Services University (USUHS) where he mentors PhD students interested in clinical informatics and he’s also an adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University – Applied Physics Lab where he teaches two of the core classes in the Data Science graduate program.
